Although there are technical difficulties in our work, there are also relational difficulties. Relationships are our most important asset, and working with different cultures can be a challenge. There are many differences in the way different cultures live, communicate, and think. As westerners, our communication is very direct. But in Somalia it is more natural to communicate indirectly. Neither way is right or wrong, but it does take time and understanding to navigate. It is important to sit and have tea; to take the time to build trust. Relationships are what life is about. Relational health equals organizational health.
